How Podcast’s Are Engaging AFL Fans

Within my role managing the Australian operations of audioBoom I’m always searching for creative ways to help sport’s teams engage with their fans through our social sound platform.

We’ve worked with the Gold Coast Suns AFL team to find the ‘Voice of the Suns’ while the UK team worked with the NFL Jacksonville Jags to feature messages of support from fans in the locker room prior to the team running out on to the Wembley Stadium field.

I’ve also previously put together this handy ideas sheet for audio fan engagement by using audioBoom which many major and grassroots clubs that use our free platform have found useful in terms of adding to the fan experience.

However there is one type of audio on our platform which is greatly resonating with sports fans and that’s in the form of short form audio podcasts.

The recent 2015 Internet Radio Trends Report highlighted that user growth is rising rapidly for podcasting with time spent listening online displacing traditional audio which in turn is leading to revenue growth from advertising. Moreover consumer behaviours are changing with a large shift to mobile listening amongst all demographics but with a skew towards tomorrow’s audience of Milennials. All of this bodes well for sporting teams looking to use audio such as podcasts to provide further content for their fans.

Many of the AFL or Aussie Rules teams on audioBoom produce weekly podcasts for their fans and are having huge listens on their 20-40 minute podcasts.

Here are a selection of AFL teams who are engaging fans on a weekly basis with their podcasts that feature fan questions, interviews with players and coaches as well as a discussion of the big issues in the game.

If your team or organisation is interested in looking into audio fan engagement then let’s talk about what audioBoom can do for your fans.
